Top Ugandan female player Bridget Shamim Bangi on Sunday night won the 2016 Rose Hill International Open in Mauritius.


Bangi stopped South Africa's Johanita Scholtz 21-7, 20-22, 21-15 to emerge champion in the women's singles. She had earlier beaten fellow Ugandan player Daisy Nakalyango 21-13, 21-13 in the semi final.


Uganda's top male player Edwin Ekiring lost in the quarter finals to Aatish Lubah (Mauritius) 20-22, 21-19, 24-22. "I did not have a good game and lost in the quarters," Ekiring told URN.


However Ekiring will be able to gain some ranking points as he struggles to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games. The other Ugandan players Daniel Mihigo and Davies Senono lost in the second round to Algerian players Mohamed Abderrahime Belarbi and Adel Hamek. Herbert Ebayo was ejected by Mauritius player Abdool Edoo 21-18, 11-21, 21-16 in the first round.

In the women's doubles the Ugandan pair of Gloria Najjuka and Daisy Nakalyango emerged champions after seeing off the Zambian pair of Evelyn Siamupangila and Ogar Siamupangila 21-18, 21-10.

Action will shift to the 2016 Thomas & Uber Cup for Africa which starts today in Mauritius. The event features teams representing member nations of the Badminton World Federation (BWF).


Winner of the African Edition of the Thomas & Uber Cup will take part in the world event to take place in the Kunshan, Jiangsu Province in China in May this year.
