City businessman Hassan Basajjabalaba has dragged Red Pepper newspaper to court; seeking for 10 billion shillings as compensatory damages.
 
Basajjabalaba accuses the tabloid of publishing several defamatory stories that tarnish his name including a rape allegation.  
 
The alleged rape story ran on November 18th titled; ‘tycoon Basajjabalaba accused of rape’ with his photograph.

According to the story, the claims of rape were made by his estranged wife, Betty Basajjabalaba, who accused him of forcing her into sex immediately after giving birth and that he also forced her into sex while in her monthly menstrual periods.
 
Other alleged defamatory stories that the city tycoon accuses Red Pepper to have published against him include; ‘ Plot to grab Basajja property finalised’, ‘ Basajja arrest order out’, Uganda @ 50, business sense/opinion Haba group compensated Shs400 billion unaccounted for’ ,’Basajja offers UBC boss medical trip’, ‘Family affair, wife pins Basajjabalaba in Shs142billion fraud case’ and ‘Basajja named in Shs6 billion state H’se fees deal’.
 
In his suit that he filed before the High Court in Kampala on Friday, Basajjabalaba says, for the past 20 years, he has been a prominent businessman and investor within Uganda, East African region and on the African continent.
 
He adds that he is an influential and well known person in various sectors including; the education sector where he is the proprietor of Kampala International University (KIU), health, religious and political circles.
 
The businessman states that the series of alleged defamatory stories published against him by Red Pepper, have among others; portrayed him as a sex-villain, fraudster, irresponsible, for which he is seeking damages.
 
Besides seeking for Shs10 billion, the businessman is also demanding for an apology from the publication with his picture particularly in regard to the alleged rape story.
 
Through his lawyers of Alaka and Co advocates, Niwagaba, Mwebesa advocates and Mugisha and Co advocates, the business tycoon also wants court to issue a permanent injunction restraining the publication from further writing, printing and publication of any similar libellous matter or article against him.
 
Court is yet to summon Red Pepper to file in its defense before a hearing date can be fixed.
