Incumbent Buliisa County Member of Parliament, Steven Birahwa Mukitale was on Sunday night arrested for allegedly campaigning beyond the stipulated time. Birahwa was arrested while campaigning at a rally in Agigo village, Ngwedo Sub County at a round 9' oclock. Ibrahim Saiga, the Buliisa district police commander, says the legislature was ordered to stop and escorted to Buliisa central police station, where he recorded a statement in relation to the matter. He was later released on bond. Saiga says two other aspirants, Noah Bigirwa Nyendwoha for woman Member of Parliament and Wandera Atuhairwe for LC5 Chair escaped arrest shortly after they saw police closing in on them. Saiga says he mounted an operation following numerous reports that aspirants were holding rallies at night which he says flouts the electoral commission campaign guidelines. Cue in... "so yesterday... " Cue out... "Birahwa Mukitale.." The electoral commission guidelines situpilate that campaigns should stop at 6pm. The legislator's case file has been forwarded to resident state attorney for perusal and determination of the charges. The district police commander says Birahwa could face charges of breaching electoral laws contrary to the parliamentary elections Act 2005. Birahwa couldnot be reached for a comment as he did not take his calls while reached on phone. According to Saiga this is yet another electoral offense to be registered in Buliisa in addition to those of defacing posters of various aspirants.
