The group denounced Bishop Katonene for allegedly mismanaging the affairs of the church in Sheema and resolved to secede from West Ankole Diocese.

Yona Mwesigwa Katonene, the embattled Bishop of West Ankole Diocese has directed the diocesan tribunal to try a group of Christians in Sheema opposed to his leadership.
Some of the Christians likely to face the tribunal are Water and Environment Minister Ephraim Kamuntu, Health Minister Dr. Elioda Tumwesigye, Sheema Woman MP Rosemary Nyakikongoro, and her Sheema North Counterpart Engineer Yorokam Katwiremu.

Others Canon Yowasi Makaru, former Bushenyi LC V chairman, Sam Kahindi, the head of Laity Kabwohe Archdeaconry, Canon David Kabugumira, head of stakeholders, Johnson Musinguzi, coordinator Sheema Kampala community and Sheema District Chairperson Pastor Mugisha.

The group denounced Bishop Katonene for allegedly mismanaging the affairs of the church in Sheema and resolved to secede from West Ankole Diocese. They asked the Church of Uganda Province to take over the affairs of the church in Sheema pending their formation of the proposed central Ankole Diocese.

On Saturday last week, a meeting convened by stakeholders at St. Emmanuel church Kabwohe in Sheema district resolved to recall nine representatives from the diocesan synod. However, Bishop Katonene will not have any of this. According to Bishop Katonene, the meeting was illegal since it is not provided for in the church structures.

Katonene says those who have declared a new Diocese made a grave mistake, and that their act tantamount to breaking canons of the Church. According to the church of Uganda constitution, a new Diocese can only be curved out of the existing Diocese by a resolution of the synod approved by a provincial assembly.

Enguineer Yorokam Katwiremu, the vice chairperson steering committee for the proposed diocese says they are not about to relent on their resolutions.

In 2013, the same group led by Canon Yowasi Makaru and Canon Sam Kahindi dragged Bishop Katonene to Mbarara High court accusing him of planning to relocate the West Ankole institute from Sheema to Bushenyi district before it is elevated to a university status.
