Dick Jakira, an official of the team says they rejected Ssentongo's jersey because it was of poor quality.

Buddu County Football Team has rejected a sports jersey donated by the Kamuli Resident District Commissioner Herman Ssentongo saying it is substandard.

On Sunday, Ssentongo handed over the sports jersey to Buddu County Football Team during their match with Ssese County team in the ongoing Buganda Football tournament.

The jersey was in fulfillment of a pledge to support the team by Masaka NRM party officials led by Ssegawa Katumba, the Municipality NRM chairperson last year.  They also donated three heifers to the team as a source of revenue. Ssentongo contested for the Sembabule LC V chairperson's seat in the 2011 polls and lost to the incumbent Ely Muhumuza.

However, he has shifted his attention to Masaka Municipality MP seat, which is currently occupied by Mathias Mpuuga. The donation of the sports jersey is seen as part of the efforts by Ssentongo to endear himself to the voters ahead of the 2016 polls.

However, the Buddu County Football Team members rejected Ssentongo's jerseys saying they were substandard but went  ahead to receive another set of jerseys donated by his rival Mathias Mpuuga. Dick Jakira, an official of the team says they rejected Ssentongo's jersey because it was of poor quality.

He says that on top of being unmarked as required by the football regulations, the jersey was plain. Vincent Mayiga, the Buddu County cultural leader says they rejected the jersey because Ssentongo was illegally appointed patron of their team, yet the Buddu county Pokino is their patron.

Mayiga says as a result, they have denounced all sorts of alliance with Ssentongo because his attachment to the team has affected its support.

Herman Ssentongo, the Kamuli RDC declined to speak to our reporter on what had transpired. However, before kickoff Ssentongo had told spectators that he had given Buddu County a jersey and Shillings 500,000 in cash.

Mathias Mpuuga accuses the District NRM leadership of playing cheap politics saying Buddu County is collectively owned by all Masaka residents irrespective of their political affiliations. He also cautioned Buddu county officials against politicising the team.

Muhammad Yiga, a Soccer fan says he is tired of politicians trying to hijack every opportunity for votes. He says most politicians do not have a strategy for sports development but just come in to win votes. According to Yiga, Ssentongo launched a soccer tournament last year, but it failed to take off due to lack of funds.
