A 42-year-old woman is in police custody in Bugiri district has for allegedly burying her one-month-old baby alive.

Harriet Kagoya was arrested on Wednesday afternoon at her brother, John Musitwa’s home in Namakoko village, Nankoma Sub County in Bugiri district. Police took Kagoya to the garden and dug out the remains of the baby boy, who was reportedly buried one week ago.

George Walyayo, the Namakoko village chairman says he received reports of a missing child four days ago but on questioning Harriet Kagoya, she was not responding well. He reported the matter to police which today called Kagoya for interrogation.

James Lubambo, the Bugiri police deputy CID chief says Kagoya disclosed that after giving birth, George Kibuli, the father of the baby boy refused to accept the child, which forced her to bury child alive.

Lubambo says police immediately got in touch with medical personnel from Bugiri hospital and went to Kagoya’s home. Police exhumed the remains of the baby boy, who had been secretly buried in a coffee plantation approximately 200 meters from the house. The body was taken to Bugiri hospital where doctors confirmed the baby died of suffocation after being buried.

According to police, Kagoya is to be charged with murder.
