Bulambuli Residents Demand Action Against UWA Rangers

Residents of Bumugibole and Masira Sub Counties in Bulambuli District are demanding for appropriate action against Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) Game rangers accused of killing one of their own in Mt. Elgon National Park on Friday last week.



The deceased has been identified as Bernard Wetaka. Two other residents identified as Charles Nakidega and Tom Nangoli sustained injuries and are admitted at Kapchorwa Hospital.

 
Another resident only identified as Hakeem escaped with minor injuries. Hakeem explains that they went into the park to get some soil and put in his garden when the UWA rangers fired at them.

Fredrick Kizza, the UWA Area Conservation Manager Mt Elgon National Park declined to comment on the matter, saying it is under police investigations.

investigations into the matter are ongoing.

Speaking at the home of the late Bernard Wetaka, who was reportedly shot to death by the UWA rangers, the Bulambuli District Woman Member of Parliament, Sarah Wekomba appealed to UWA officials to be considerate to the residents since the National Park is a source of their livelihood.
