Civil Aviation Authority-CAA will not compensate Agriculture Ministry officials and retired staff evicted from the land next to Entebbe International airport.

On Saturday last week, Aviation Police evicted 55 people from the staff quarters of the Agriculture Ministry on the directives of CAA.

The staff quarters are behind the control tower of Entebbe international airport, 70 meters away from the CAA headquarters.

The affected include retired Agriculture Ministry officials and those currently under the Veterinary department.

The evictees have refused to vacate the area, demanding that CAA compensates them. Ronald Orea, the area defense secretary, told URN that they will not leave the premises without compensation.

But the CAA Spokesperson, Vianney Luggya, says they will not compensate the evicted people, saying they have been occupying the houses illegally.  He also notes that the presence of the group is a threat to the safety of the airport.

Bushra Namirimu, the Senior Public Relations Officer Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industries and Fisheries told URN that the contested land was given to CAA for the expansion of the airport.

"However, even then Government had stopped providing Housing to Public Servants way back and they all received a consolidated pay," she said.

Adding that, "The people in those houses are not supposed to be there. They had been given an ultimatum of a year to vacate the premises. So now, Compensation for what? They are not entitled to any compensation."
