The case in which the Archbishop Stanley Ntagali was dragged to court over wrangles in West Ankole Diocese, has been referred to Principal Judge for mediation.

This development happened today as the case came up for hearing before High Court Judge Lydia Mugambe Ssali.  Justice Mugambe gave the two warring parties up to November 8 to explore the option of out-of-court settlement.

If the two parties have not come a common understanding by November 8, the file will then be sent back to justice Mugambe, for hearing on its merits and judgment.

This matter arose earlier this month when a group of eleven Canons led by Christopher Kisembo, sued the Anglican Church head for allegedly taking over the powers of the Episcopal jurisdiction of West Ankole Diocese.

The Canons allege that Archbishop Ntagali is abusing his authority and the constitution of the Province of the Church of Uganda by appointing a commission to choose a new Bishop for West Ankole Diocese after the retirement of Rt. Rev Yona Katonene.

The concerned canons state that as West Ankole Diocese Synod members, they had already put in a place a commission to elect a new Bishop and that the move by the Archbishop undermines their role as members of the Diocesan Nominations Committee.

They also contend that the action of the Archbishop borders on abuse of office and causes unnecessary mental torture for the canons.

About a fortnight ago, justice Mugambe issued interim orders blocking the Anglican head from taking over the matters of West Ankole Diocese until this matter is finally settled.

Justice Mugambe also ordered the West Ankole Diocesan Secretary Reverend Canon Arthur Atwine to take over the Episcopal jurisdiction of the Diocese.
