Female athlete Janat Chemusto returned from the 2nd Africa Youth Athletics Championships on Tuesday with two medals.

"I am happy that I managed to work hard and win a silver and bronze medal in Mauritius," Chemusto told URN on phone upon arrival aboard an Emirates Airlines flight.

Head Coach Nalis Bigingo said Mercy Laker failed to impress in the discus competition, while Abel Chebet and Kevin Kibet finished 5th and 7th respectively in the 1,500m race. Bigingo said the team would have performed better if the boys were also allowed to enter the 3,000m race.

Dominic Otuchet, President of the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) said he was glad that Uganda managed to bring back two medals after sending only four athletes. He added that it was important they gave the young athletes international exposure.

At the 1st African Youth Athletics Championships held in Warri State in Nigeria in 2013, Uganda only managed to a silver medal in the triple jump through Felix Watmon who finished behind Nigeria's Fabianime Edoki.

Although Kenya dominated most of the middle and long distance events, South Africa was the overall strongest nation taking no less than 17 gold medals and showing its strength particularly in the sprints and throws. The event attracted 27 nations.
