Gulu police are holding one of their own accused of attempting to rape a defilement victim under police protection. The suspect is Kenneth Bongomin, a cop attached to Gulu Central Police station.
He is wanted for attempting to rape a 13-year-old defilement victim who was placed under the custody of the child and family protection unit after she was defiled by Godfrey Onek on June 20th last month.

Bongomin reportedly picked up the girl from the room where she had spent the night and attempted to defile her. Sunday Abwol, the guardian of the defilement victim says the minor bit the police man’s fingers as she tried to cover her mouth in order to prevent her from screaming as he attempted to defile her.

Abwol says that it is unfortunate that she is still seeking justice for the man who raped her child and a cop on duty tries to do the same at a police station.

Patrick Jimmy Okema, the Aswa region police spokesperson has condemned the incident saying it is very embarrassing for an officer to take advantage of a victim placed under his care. He says once found guilty, Bongomin will be charged with attempted rape and indecent assault.

Source at the police station say Bongomin was not authorized to go to the child and family protection unit since it is only female police officers who mandates to take care vulnerable children.

His file has been submitted to the resident state attorney for advice before the suspect can appear before court. Okema says they will conduct medical examinations on the victim to establish whether there was actual penetration. By the time of filing this report, the guardian of the defilement victim had petitioned Human Rights Focus, a nongovernmental organization in Gulu.

In 2013, a police officer based in Rakai was arrested for defiling and impregnanting a 15-year-old girl. There was also a case of police officer in Gulu defiling and infecting with HIV/AIDS a minor.
