A Rakai couple is in police custody following the death of their child during a domestic squabble.

Initial reports indicate that the couple's 10-year-old child was hit by a brick during a physical confrontation between the parents.

The child has been identified as Vicky Namatovu. The child's parents are Moses Lubega and his wife Rose Nakanwagi.

The couple, resident in Kyotera town council, were arrested on Monday. Rakai district Criminal Intelligence and Investigations Department head SP Taban Chiriga confirmed the arrest.

Chiriga says police intervened after some residents alerted police that they suspected the couple could have killed their daughter during a domestic squabble on Saturday last week at Kyankere village in Kabira Sub-county.

Speaking to police after their arrest, Nakanwagi said that her husband threw a brick at her that missed her and hit their daughter, knocking her unconscious. The girl bled profousely from her head injury and died within minutes.

Nakanwagi said that they were able to hurriedly bury their daughter on Sunday with the help of a few relatives.

Joseph Kalwanyi, the Kyankere LCI Chairperson, said first respondents found the child already dead, lying in a pool of blood.

Chiriga said that police visited the scene, after being alerted by some residents, and found evidence of clotted blood on the floor of the couple's home on Monday. Police then ordered for the exhumation of Namatovu's body while they took her parents into custody.

Nakanwagi further revealed to the police that Namatovu's elder brother had died after her husband Lubega repeatedly struck him with a stick on the stomach in 2011.

Lubega blamed Nakanwagi for starting the fight that led to the death of Namatovu.

The couple, however, denied killing their daughter.

Chiriga said that a file CRB 213/2015 had been opened up and the couple will face charges of murder.

However, some women activists have suggested that police treat Nakanwagi as a victim of domestic violence and not a murderer. Josephine Namaganda, a women's rights activist, said that domestic violence is very common in Rakai district and women and children are the most vulnerable.

The couple have been married for about ten years and had three children. A five year old child is the only one still alive from their offspring.
