The chief magistrates court in Nebbi has ordered for a recount of the ballot cast on February 23 in the LC 5 election of Nebbi district.
Today, John Agaba, the chief magistrate, issued a court order for a recount and demanded for a list of all the serial numbers on the seals which where placed on the ballot boxes after voting and accounting of the ballots for the purpose of the recounting exercise.
He also ordered the electoral commission to furnish court with tally sheets and declaration form, which are duly signed.
The magistrate however noted that the recounting of the votes must be conducted from a secure and peaceful environment.
Robert Okumu, the NRM candidate for Nebbi district LC5 chairperson filed a suit seeking a recount of votes, after his rival Esrom William Alenyo, was declared the winner in the February 23 elections.
Okumu alleged that some of his valid votes were disregarded. He also said the margin separating the two was not 82 votes as declared by electoral commission, but 20 votes.
The magistrate also ordered the electoral commission and Alenyo Esrom William to pay the costs to the applicant.
