Cyprian Otine, the Lira municipality deputy mayor, has been charged with theft.

Prosecution told the Grade two Magistrates court presided over by Edward Etot that Otine, and others still at large stole a metallic trailer container, maroon in color valued at approximately shs11.5m.

The container belongs to Onyanga Caesar.

The suspects allegedly stole the container on December 26, 2010 at Mayor’s Garden in Lira town.

The deputy mayor was charged with theft and released on a non-cash bail. He reappears in court and ordered to reappear on May 13 for mention of the case.

The Magistrate said he couldn’t fix date of hearing because the mayor’s accomplices are still at large.

Otine’s case first came up in February 3, when he was jointly arrested with Omule Simba and released on police bond, pending police investigations.

Henry Alyanga, the Central North police spokesman, said the rapid Response Unit was handling Otine’s case.
Alyanga said Otine and his accomplices sold two containers, which were recovered from Pakwach in Nebbi district and Abim district.

Otine denied the charge and was released on none cash bail of shs1m and his two sureties bonded at shs5m not cast.

Omule Simbe, Lira Municipality Law enforcement Officer is said to be in hiding after jumping police bond.

Police said they are still investigating other cases against the Deputy Mayor following complaint that he sold more containers which were impounded by Lira Municipal Council and kept in the Mayors Garden.
