Karusandara Flood Victims Cry for Help

More than 200 families displaced by floods that ravaged Karusandara Sub County, Kasese district close to two months ago, are struggling to survive. 

The families were displaced after the floods hit four villages of Kanyabiyobi, kabaka, kanamba and Kyalanga in Karusandara Sub County following a heavy down pour that burst the banks of River Mubuku and Ssebwe.

With no access to basic necessities, the families can hardly afford a meal a day, while their children are no longer attending school due to the long distance from the make shift internally displaced people's camp where they are hosted.

Jonice Kabugho, one of the displaced parents in the camp says they are in dire need of assistance in order to provide food, education and other basic services to the children.

The camp is currently home to more than 70 children. Its located 5 kilometers away from Karusandara primary school, the nearest educational facility in the area.  As a result, children who cannot trek the distance on a daily basis spend the entire day in the camp and its neighborhood, Karusandara Sub County Chairperson Ezra Turyagumanawe says.

Kasese District Education Officer George Mayingya says a list of the affected pupils has been compiled waiting to be shifted to other schools were they can sit their end of term one exams.
