Soroti district leaders have temporarily halted the mass reshuffle of head teachers and classroom teachers whose schools posted poor results in Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE).
Last year, the district produced 144 candidates in Division one, indicating a slight improvement from 2015 when the district got only 83 candidates passing in Division one.
In what appeared as a new strategy to boost performance, the education department headed by D.E.O Everest Okello caused the transfers of 17 head teachers and 74 classroom teachers. Several others were lined up for possible demotion.
But the decision met resistance from the District Executive Committee headed by the LCV chairperson George Michael Egunyu on grounds that that the transfers were not approved. The committee has since voted to halt the exercise.
Joseph Balisanyuka, Soroti Chief Administrative Officer is currently reviewing the list to ascertain those who had genuinely requested for transfer and those transferred against their will.
Calvin Elenyu, the district secretary for education says the final list shall be issued once the ongoing scrutiny is done.
"We agreed that only teachers who had requested for transfer should be removed but not all the head teachers and classroom teachers simply because their schools are not performing well." Elenyu said.

Simon Emoru Enangu, the district inspector of schools said the transfer was intended to improve performance and service delivery in the education sector. Emoru says that they followed strict guidelines before effecting the decision to reshuffle the head teachers and classroom teachers.
