DP Secretary General Mathias Nsubuga says the DP National Executive Committee has already discussed the proposed regulation that is now awaiting endorsement from the delegate's conference.

Any supporter of the Democratic Party who contests as an independent candidate for any elective position in the next general election will be suspended for up to five years, a proposed guideline by the opposition group suggests.

DP Secretary General Mathias Nsubuga says the DP National Executive Committee has already discussed the proposed regulation that is now awaiting endorsement from the delegate's conference.

Nsubuga said that regardless of the outcome of the elections they may have participated in, the independents will not be allowed to participate in any party activity and will be regarded as intransigent members until such a period elapses. He was meeting party delegates from Lwengo district in Mbirizi town council.

Nsubuga, who also doubles as Member of Parliament for Bukoto South, added that the new regulation will take effect after the successful party primaries in which flag bearers will be declared.

DP is currently electing its lower leadership structures in which independents are also taking part, but Nsubuga says such individuals ought to be stopped.

He says that earlier problems that led to divisions in some areas prompting members to contest as independents cannot be used to justify and sustain the practice.

However, Peter Mutesasira, another DP member who independently contested for the Masaka Municipality parliamentary seat in 2011 warns that the regulation is likely to draw more people out of the party.

He has challenged the DP top leadership to instead focus at conducting clean primary elections for 2016 and building cohesion other than punishing victims of the party's inconsistencies.

Some of the 2011, DP independents are Erias Lukwago, the Kampala City Lord Mayor, Mathias Mpuuga, the Masaka Municipality MP and Sam Walter Lubega, a former Presidential candidate amongst others.

These and several other disgruntled DP leaders allied to the Suubi pressure group and assimilated themselves under the Inter-party Coalition that fronted FDC's Dr. Kiiza Besigye for presidency.

Mathias Mpuuga recently told a press conference in Masaka that his defiance was in protest of  the party leadership which deviated from the principles of democracy in choosing flag bearers.
