Mao failed to vote in the presidential elections after his details were found missing on the national voters' register. He said he was hospitalised in Nairobi at the time the bio-metric voters' register was being compiled and updated.

The Electoral Commission said Mao never registered for the national identity cards whose data was used to compile the bio-metric register.

As a result, the former student leader, legislator, district chairperson and presidential candidate failed to be nominated for Gulu Municipality Member of Parliament seat since he was not a registered voter.

The outspoken politician last voted in 2011 when he was challenging President Museveni for the country's top job. He could not hide his excitement while speaking to Uganda Radio Network.
