Teams from Egypt and the Democratic Republic Congo will miss the 2016 Cecafa Nile Basin Cup next month.

Nicholas Musonye, the Secretary General of the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (Cecafa) told URN during an interview at the Imperial Hotel in Kampala on Friday night that teams from the two countries declined to attend.


"We sent them invitations as guest sides to spice up the event, but they cannot make it because of busy schedules," said Musonye.  The 2016 Cecafa Nile Basin Cup is slated for May 22 to June 4th in Sudan.

Musonye who was in Uganda to conduct a Confederation of African Football (CAF) workshop said the hosts Sudan are already prepared to host the event.  The event return after it was hosted by the same country in 2014. Uganda's SC Victoria University won the inaugural Cup after defeating Kenya's AFC Leopards.


"This event is good for our players in the region to showcase their talents besides the other tournaments like the Senior Challenge Cup and the Cecafa Kagame Club Championships," added Musonye.


He said the hosts will cater for transport, accommodation and local transport for all the teams. "We are still discussing what the prize money will be for the best three teams," he added.

He said all member nations in the Cecafa region like Uganda, Kenya, Sudan, South Sudan, Zanzibar, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Djibouti and Ethiopia. Uganda will be represented by KCCA FC who finished third in the 2014/2015 Azam Uganda Premier League.


Besides this event, the Cecafa regional body also organise the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup, Kagame Club Championship, U-17 Youth Championship and the women's Championship.
