The ongoing dry weather season is posing significant challenges for the communities in Karamoja sub region.
With no drop of rain over the last eight weeks, crops have withered, shallow-wells are low on water while others have run dry due to the sweltering heat. Migrations have also started earlier than expected as pastoralists search for water away from the land of the nomads once characterized by armed conflict and cattle rustling.
One Losike, a peasant from Nakadeli parish, Rupa Sub County says farmers this year could have scored good yields if rains had persisted adding that households had settled down to plant crops.
Francis Okwii, the District Agricultural Officer Moroto says the season began with great rains , but as soon as the planting target hit, the rain stopped. The last time Karamoja had a trace of measurable rain was in the months of April.
