Jessica Alupo, the Minister of Education and Sports says the micro finance support centre has put in place all modalities to ensure that teachers receive the money.

The Education and Sports ministry has released the first batch of the revolving fund to two Teacher's savings and credits cooperatives-SACCOs. Mukono Kayunga Teachers' Sacco and Luwero Teachers' SACCO received a total of UGX 640 Million on Monday from the Uganda Microfinance Support Center.

Uganda National Teachers Union-UNATU had earlier warned its members not to apply for the loan should the fund remain under the micro finance support centre.

James Tweheyo, the UNATU secretary general said it was wrong the ministry to place the money under the center yet they had negotiated for it.

However, the launch of the disbursement exercise seems to have weakened the position of the teachers' union.

Jessica Alupo, the Minister of Education and Sports says the micro finance support centre has put in place all modalities to ensure that teachers receive the money.

She says the launch marks the beginning of a phased release of the funds to the teachers.

She says the ministry will embark on fresh sensitization of the teachers so that all of them can join SACCOS to access the money.

UNATU officials have not yet commented on the latest development. Teachers have been in battle with the education ministry officials for the last one and half years over the SACCO money.

While they wanted the funds channeled through the apex UNATU SACCO, the education ministry instead sent the money to the micro finance support centre saying UNATU does not represent all the teachers in the country

Mary Josephine Nabiyango, the chairperson of Mukono Kayunga Teachers' Sacco has also not commented in the development as she could neither pick nor return our calls
