Vvictory celebrations by NRM supporters in the Sironko LC 3 by-elections were cut short yesterday evening, by a tragic road accident which claimed one person and injured 18 others.
A son to Serapio Wetaka one of the LC 3 candidates for Bunyafa Sub-county died when a lorry carrying his jubilating supporters overturned. Eighteen others who are critically injured are admitted in Mbale Hospital.
The supporters were prematurely celebrating the unofficial results that had put Wetaka ahead of FDC's Martin Wasike. It later turned out that Wetaka had lost the seat to Wasike.
Kato Matanda, the Sironko Deputy Resident District Commissioner, says the supporters were crammed in a tipper lorry which lost control in Bunazani trading center in Budadiri. Kato blames the accident on overloading.
Both the NRM and FDC each won two LC3 seats in the hotly contested by-elections in Sironko. The NRM won in Bukiyi and Nalusale Sub-counties while FDC took Buwasa and Bunyafa.
The elections pitted the Minister for the Presidency Beatrice Wabudeya against MP Nandala Mafabi as both funded opposing candidates.
