Top badminton star Edwin Ekiring has improved his chances of qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Games after moving five places better in the latest world ranking.

After the rankings released on Thursday by the Badminton World Federation (BWF), Ekiring improved to 76th place with 20573 points.

"This is very good for Ekiring because it makes him keep the top ranking in Africa and also improve in the top 100 placings which would grant him a place at the Olympics," Simon Mugabi, the CEO Uganda Badminton Association told Xinhua.

However Mugabi said the Netherlands based Ekiring needs to make sure that he maintains his position or even improve. "Qualification for the Olympics is not an easy task and players must make sure they keep performing and gaining ranking points till May next year.

South Africa's Jacob Maliekal who won gold at the 2015 All Africa Games in Congo Brazzaville maintained his 84th place.  China's Chen Long maintained his top ranking, while Jan O. Jorgensen (Denmark) is second.

In the women's singles Nigeria's Grace Gabriel dropped in the rankings to 67, but kept her chances alive of qualifying for the Olympics together with Kate Foo Kune (Mauritius) who is ranked 73.

Uganda's Bridget Shamim Bangi dropped to 142 after her second round loss at the Ethiopia International Championship. India's Saina Nehwal has maintained her top spot in the women's rankings.
