Uganda’s Edwin Ekiring has not been ranked for the 2014 Uganda International Open Championship slated for February 20-23 at the MTN Arena, Lugogo.

According to the draw made by the World Badminton Federation (WBF) early this week, Ekiring who plies his trade with a top club in Holland and represented Uganda at the last two Olympic Games, will play his first round game against one of the qualifiers.

Simon Mugabi, the Chief Executive Officer of the Uganda Badminton Association (UBA) said Ekiring is not seeded for the tournament because he has lately dropped in the World ranking.
Sri Lanka’s Karunaratne who won the men’s singles title last year has been seeded one for the three day event. Mugabi said they are set for the tournament which will bring together over 30 foreign players. He said the draws have been made and some categories will have players battle in the qualifiers first to make the main draw.

While Karunaratne, who will be defending his title he won last year will be the top seed of the tournament, South Africa’s Jacob Maliekal and Nigeria’s Jinkam Ifraimu Bulus are ranked second and third respectively.

For the women’s draw, Uganda’s Shamin Bangi is ranked at number five, while India’s Trupti Murgunde and Hadia Hosny from Egypt are first and second respectively.

Mugabi said they expect a very competitive tournament because the number of foreign players is bigger than in previous events. He said they are aware that players from all over the world will take part in the tournament eager to score ranking points as they target qualification for the 2016 Olympics.

Other foreign players expected in the three days tournament will come from Malaysia, Mauritius, Botswana and Zambia among others.
