Uganda's star badminton player Edwin Ekiring will face USA's Meng-Yung Ong in the third round of the MBBC USA International Open Championship at the Manhanttan Beach Club, California today.

Ekiring who is currently ranked second in Africa behind South Africa's Jacob Maliekal is struggling to qualify for the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.

On Thursday he picked a walkover Germany's Jonathan Persson who did not show up. Victory for Ekiring will see him face the winner between Italy's Rosario Maddaloni and Dewantoro Pandu (India) in the quarter final.

According to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) the championship in California will have a cash prize of UGX19,800,000 (US$6,000). While Ekiring is ranked fourth in that tournament, Osieni  Guerrero from Cuba is top ranked and Howard Shu is ranked second.

Ekiring told URN online from the US that he is determined to perform well in the US and also take part in the Mauritius and Uganda Open Championships as well. "I need to keep working hard to be able to get good ranking points that can help me qualify for the Olympics," he added.
