Democratic Party’s Mohamed Kawuma has taken an early lead in today's Entebbe Municipality parliamentary race as results in begin trickling in.
Provisional results from 18 polling stations out of a total of 74 puts Kawuma at 2,689 votes ahead of National Resistance Movement’s Patience Mubangizi whose tally from the 18 polling stations stand at 1,687 votes.
The other racers, Wilberforce Sseryazi of the Forum for Democratic Change and independent Hawa Nakibule, have less than 50 votes to their names combined.
The results are still not an indicator of who will eventually take the day as the results represent just 25 percent of polling stations in Entebbe municipality.
But that has not stopped Kawuma’s supporters from storming the streets to celebrate what they believe could be a big win for their candidate.
Police and other security operatives are closely monitoring the jubilant crowds in an apparent attempt to ensure they remain peaceful.
Kawuma was recalled from parliament after Mubangizi successfully petitioned the High Court claiming his election was froth with malpractices.
If he retains his seat it could be an indicator of the political mood in the country as the economic crisis gets even grimmer with inflation running at a high of 21.4 percent and the shilling in a free fall.
