A pit has caved in killing renowned excavator in Mbarara town. Stephen Sempenda was killed on Monday evening at Kyapotani village in Kakoba Division of Mbarara municipality while digging a 40-feet deep latrine pit. It took almost took one hour for Police to retrieve the body.  Johnson Ssempa, a close friend to the deceased says that Sempenda went beyond the recommended fifteen feet because he was desperately in need of money. Each foot costs 15,000 shillings. Kurusumu Ssali, the LC II chairperson of Nyamityobora ward blames the unfortunate incident on the rain that has softened the soil in the area making it risky for latrine excavators.

Munyira Saviour, the Rwizi Region Fire Officer says that by the time they arrived at the scene Sempenda was already dead. He blames the residents and local authorities for notifying the police late, which made it difficult to save the deceased. Following the incident police has warned developers against excavating deep pits, which endangers the lives of the people tasked to do the work.  Muyira urges local council leaders to embark on a house to house supervision exercise to stop whoever is found excavating pits beyond fifteen feet.
