Expectant mothers visiting Busula Health Centre III in  Katikamu subcounty in Luweero have been forced to resort to Traditional Birth Attendants (TBA's) because they are asked a lot of money to deliver at the government facility.
 
The mothers claim that whenever they visit Busula health centre, they are asked to buy the Mama Kits which are supposed to be free for every expectant mother.
 
Vicent Kyomuhendo, a resident of Busula, was forced to take his wife who was nine months pregnant to a Traditional Birth Attendant (TBA) because a midwife at the facility asked him to pay 30, 000 shillings for the Mama Kit.
 
More concerned patients informed this reporter that they are charged between 20,000 to 30, 000 shillings for a Mama Kit at Busula health centre. The charges are usually made by the midwives on duty.
 
A single Mama Kit, which is also referred to  as Clean Delivery Kit, includes; 500 grams of cotton wool, baby soap, two razor blades, 2 polythene sheets, two gauze pieces, three surgical gloves, and an immunization card.
 
The health ministry provides these kits to health facilities to distribute to expectant mothers unable to buy their own.
 
Katikamu Sub County chairman Sam Sserunjoji says he has received numerous complaints about the practice. He says he has also received complaints that patients are forced to buy the anti-Malaria drug Coartem.
 
He asks concerned authorities to join the investigations into theft of government drugs at the facility.
 
At the health centre, the in charge Juliet Zzawedde admits that she has received related complaints.
 
She says that she started investigations a week ago into the accusations and those found guilty will face the law.
 
She says that she has tightened monitoring at the facility she heads.
