In short
A fire has destroyed Wamala Coffee Factory in Mityana destroying millions of shillings of coffee and machinery.

Fire has gutted the Wamala Coffee factory at Wabigalo in Mityana town, destroying coffee and properties worth millions of money.
The Mityana district police commander Kintu Henry says that the fire started in the early hours of Tuesday, as the workers assembled to start work.
Kintu says the fire is thought to have started from an electrical fault in the wires at the top of the roof and then spread.
He says the workers struggled to put out the fire before the police fire brigade vehicle from Kampala arrived at the scene.
He adds that no person was injured during the incident but about five tonnes of coffee were burnt, and all the machines destroyed.

Haruna Kaye, one of the witnesses, says he saw the smoke coming from the roof and alerted everyone to the fire.
He says that by the time they managed to break into the factory, the fire was already out of control.
The coffee factory belongs to Wamala Union, which is one of the few cooperatives which was started in the early 1930’s.
Tebe James, one of the traders, appealed to the police and the government to extend fire fighting services to the districts outside Kampala.
Tebe cites the example of Mityana town which he says is growing at a high speed and suffers fires a lot which destroy a lot of businesses.
