Dennis Mangeni, a fisherman at Bumba Island in Jaguza Sub County in Mayuge district has drowned in Lake Victoria. The incident occurred this afternoon after Mangeni allegedly caught an oversize Nile Perch, which dragged him into the lake.

Patrick Mudhugwe was with Mangeni when he met his death. According to Mudhugwe, he was rowing the canoe while Mangeni was fishing. He says that Mangeni caught a Nile Perch believed to weigh about 70 kilograms, which overpowered him and pulled him into the water.

Sowedi Igaga, the Beach Management Unit Chairperson Bumba Island says the body of the deceased is yet to be retrieved from the lake. He says it is a pity that fishermen continue using undersize fishing gears and boats despite repeated warnings.

Caroline Akoth, the Mayuge District police commander says similar accidents resulting from the use of undersize fishing gears and boats are often recorded.

She has promised to liaise with the Beach Management Unit to arrest fishermen using undersize gears. In 2011, Arajab Magala, also a fisherman drowned near Kirinya B island, in Jaguza sub county in Mayuge district.
