While the national maternal mortality ratio is 438 per 100,000 live births, the ratios in Karamoja region and Acholi sub region stand at 750 and 561 respectively.
First lady and Minister for Karamoja Janet Kataha Museveni has pinned local government leaders in Karamoja and Acholi for failure to reduce maternal mortality rates in their regions.
She said local government leaders have a very important role in sensitizing mothers about the need to go for antenatal checkups but those in Karamoja and Acholi have not lived to that expectation.
Mrs. Museveni explained that district leaders have continued to work in isolation from the health ministry; the reason why they have not reduced maternal deaths in their regions

Janent Museveni was receiving an over twenty five billion shillings grant aimed at strengthening health services in Karamoja and Acholi.
The grant is funded by Korea international Co-Operation Agency (KOICA) and implanted by UN Children's Fund ( UNICEF ) Funding under the project will be directed to expectant mothers , children under five years of age and new-borns from districts of Abim, Amudat Kaabong, Kotido, Moroto, Napak, Nakapiripirit, Agago, Kitgum and Pader.
According to the UNICEF country representative, Aida Girma, the grant will be used to recruit skilled health workers; improve operational efficiency of health facilities; equip health facilities with appropriate medical equipment among others.

Despite Uganda having a good health sector and sub sector policies and strategies for reducing maternal mortality-such as the Health Policy; Health Sector Strategic and Investment Plan; road map for maternal and new-born morbidity and mortality reduction; and child survival strategy, development partners note that implementation, accountability and monitoring remains weak.
Korean Ambassador to Uganda , Park Jongdae appealed to the implementing partners to sensitize people especially those in Karamoja region against the dangers of alcoholism as such habits have resulted into domestic violence.
