The police in Kanungu have arrested five people suspected to have attacked a local man and cut off his private parts last week.
Henry Minyeto, the Kanungu District Police Commander, says the suspects are believed to have waylaid Moses Rukundo on Independence Day, mutilating him and leaving him lying unconscious in a pool of blood on a roadside. Rukundo was rescued by the police and rushed to Nyakibale Hospital in Rukungiri, where he is still admitted in critical condition.
The five men arrested for the crime are all residents of Bugongo Cell in Kihihi Town Council. Officer Minyeto identifies them only by their surnames. They are Kabandize, Turyamureeba, Nuwagaba, Sajja and Tumwesigye, all aged between 24 and 35 years.
The motive of the attack is still unknown although initial police investigations point to conflicts over adultery and land.
