A five-month-old baby girl is nursing severe wounds at Muhoro health center II, Kagadi district following an attack by stray Chimpanzees.

The baby's mother, Oliver Kemigisha told Uganda Radio Network that more than 20 chimpanzees believed to have escaped from Kangombe forest reserve invaded their home in Kyamajaka cell in Kagadi town Council on Sunday afternoon and attacked her child.

According to Kemigisha, the child was lying on the verandah alongside her three-year-old sister when one of the chimpanzees escaped with the baby to the bush prompting her to raise an alarm, which attracted residents.

Kemigisha says residents pursued the chimpanzees and found the injured baby in the bush. They immediately rushed her to Muhoro Health Centre II where she is nursing severe wounds. Attacks by stray game animals have become rampant in Bunyoro region.

Last week, a herd of stray elephants from Murchison National park invaded several villages in Masindi district causing tension among residents. Officials from the Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wild Life Conservation Trust haven't yet commented as they couldn't be reached on their known cellphones.
