James Peter Aurien the former Mukono District Police Commander, who is in jail for allegedly murdering his wife, failed to obtain bail yesterday. Aurien is on remand in Kirinya Prison in Jinja awaiting the retrial of his murder case. He is accused of shooting and killing his wife Christine Apolot in April 2008. Aurien fled the scene of the shooting and remained in hiding for several weeks, finally surrendering to police in Kampala. Last year, the Director of Public Prosecutions withdrew the original case against Aurien when the key witness to the murder, Apolot's sister, disappeared. However after pressure from the judiciary and civic groups, the case was reopened. Yesterday the police officer was presented to court to Mukono High Court to apply for bail. However the trial judge, Justice Irene Mulyagonja Kakooza was no in court and Aurien was taken back to Kirinya Prison where he will remain until May 19th when his case comes up for mention.
