Four fishermen drowned in Lake Albert after their boat capsized following heavy winds on Wednesday night.

The incident happened near Butiaba, the biggest landing site in Butiaba sub county Buliisa district.

Pascal Ecumu, the officer in charge Lake Albert Police Marine confirms that the incident occurred at around 2am. He says the accident occurred after the four fishermen boarded and went fishing while it rained heavily. Ecumu explains that the boat capsized half a kilometer from Butiaba Landing Site.

Ecumu says three dead bodies have been retrieved during a joint search operation by marine police and the fishing community.

The deceased have been identified as Agena Ojiiki, Opio and Miise all fishermen and Congolese nationals residing at Butiaba Landing Site.

Ecumu says two dead bodies were retrieved yesterday while another one was discovered this morning.

He says all the dead bodies have been claimed by their relatives living in Uganda adding that police is still searching for one more body still missing.

Ecumu however cautions the fishing community against moving and fishing during heavy rains, noting that the storm has become a death trap for the travelers and fishermen on Lake Albert.

Two weeks ago, another boat carrying nine people capsized on the same lake killing four people at Kaiso landing site. Three months ago, 16 people also died after their boat capsized while traveling to Panyamor market in Nebbi district.
