John Abela Apera, the officer in charge of Rugashari police post and three of his juniors have been arrested for allegedly losing a gun.

Abela was arrested together with SPC Elisa Kagadisa, Augustine Sentongo and Peter Kitamuga  all attached to Rugashari police post in Rugashari sub county, Kibaale district.

Charles Ssebambulidde, the Midwestern regional police commander says the police officers were arrested following an incident in which unknown thugs broke into one of the police officer’s homes and took off with an AK47 rifle and sixty rounds of ammunition last week.

Although the gun was later recovered from a police deserter only identified as Saul who had hidden it in the bush, Ssebambulidde says the police officers remain answerable for negligence.

The regional police commander says as the in charge of the police post, Abela failed to supervise his juniors at night and they slept paving way for the thugs to break into the police post.

Besides the police officers, five civilians have also been arrested in relation to the incident. Police have declined to name the suspects as the matter is still under investigation.

Ssebambulidde explains that police have not yet preferred any charges against the police deserter and the five civilians as they are still consulting police headquarters in Kampala.
