Four Royal Guards in the Kingdom of Rwenzururu have been killed following a raid by the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces- UPDF on the palace and administrative office of Obusinga bwa Rwenzururu.

Clarence Bwambale, the Rwenzururu Kingdom Information Minister says the four guards were killed in a fight with UPDF officers who wanted to gain access to the offices located on Rwenzori Street in the centre of Kasese town. One UPDF soldier was injured after being stabbed by a guard.

The army and police wanted to search the offices in what is believed to be an operation against youth groups who had set up a training camp in Karangura Sub County.

The army surrounded the royal palace of Obusinga bwa Rwenzururu since last evening but remained camped outside the palace while patrolling neighborhoods.

This morning, their operation was extended to the city centre, the location of the administrative offices.  They however met resistance from royal guards who were armed with machetes, bows and spears.

Lt Arthur Timbaganya, the second division spokesperson confirms the death reports. Our reporter in Kasese says the bodies of the dead; two men and two women, have been taken to Kasese town mortuary.

Roads remain blocked in Kasese municipality as the UPDF maintains heavy presence in the town.

Another operation is underway in Buremba, some 15km outside Kasese town, where some of the guards are believed to be operating a camp, says Timbaganya.
