Francis Gimara, a lawyer with Arcadia Advocates is the new President of Uganda Law Society following elections held last evening at Speke Resort Hotel Munyonyo, Kampala.

Gimara polled 710 votes to beat his rival Peter Kizito Musoke from Shonubi, Musoke Co. Advocates who scored 259 votes.

The 38-year old replaces Ruth Sebatindira who had been at the helm of the law society for the last three years. Her two year term was extended following the flop of last year's elections over predetermined winners.

The elections also returned Pheona Nabasa Wall as the new Secretary of the society after getting 541 votes against her closet rival Ivan Engoru who polled 428 votes. Shifra Lukwago and Alice Namuli were both unopposed to retain the positions of Treasurer and Vice President respectively.

This is the first time that the lawyer's umbrella body is using the secret ballot election system in its elections. Previous elections were conducted by way of show of hands by the members.

In his acceptance speech, Gimara acknowledged the overwhelming support extended to him and pledged to work for a united law society.
 
Who is Francis Gimara

He was born in Nsambya hospital in February 1978, the new ULS president is 38 years.

He attended Naguru-Katale primary school located in Nakawa Division, Kampala for his primary cycle of education.

Gimara attended Kabalega Secondary School in Masindi District for his secondary education.

He holds a Master's Degree in Laws from Cambridge University, a Bachelor of Laws from Makerere University and a Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre. He also has a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration from Edinburgh Business School (Herriot Watt University).

He was the first Company Secretary of Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC). He once served as the Acting Managing Director of UBC for a period of six months.

He is the founder and Managing Partner of MB Gimara & Co Advocates that has since merged to become Arcadia Advocates. He is a member of the East African Law Society, the Pan African Lawyers Union and the International Bar Association.
