The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (Fufa) has said they are glad Burundi’s Lydia Nsekera was last week elected a Fifa executive member.

Federation of Uganda Football Associations-FUFA has welcomed the election of Lydia Nsekera to the executive of the Federation of International Football Association-FIFA.  Nsekera is the president of Burundi Football Administration. Nsekera was elected to the FIFA executive last week during the FIFA congress in Mauritius. Her election makes her the first woman to make it to the FIFA executive in the organization’s109-year history.
She collected 95 of the 203 votes ahead of Australia’s Moya Dodd and Sonia Bien-Aime, of Turks and Caicos Islands. Nsekera, also a member of Cecafa was last year co-opted to the Fifa executive committee and has been head of the Burundi FA since 2004. Rogers Mulindwa, the FUFA Head of Communication told Uganda Radio Network on Monday morning that Nsekera’s election is good for African football, but particularly for women football and the Cecafa region. He says in electing Nsekera, they can see the problems of women football on the continent being handled more urgently by the world body.
Mulindwa, a Cecafa official also said electing Nsereka during this time when Fifa was trying to fight racism in the sport showed that there is unity. He says Nsekera will play a big role in trying to find ways to fight racism. The 46 year old Nsekera is also a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and a member of the independent governance committee set up in 2011 to tackle corruption within Fifa.
