Gov't Whip: Museveni Was Misquoted

President, Yoweri Museveni has no intentions of gagging the media, the Government Chief Whip, Ruth Nankabirwa has said.  

She disclosed this while addressing journalists under the Uganda Parliamentary Press Association-UPPA to clarify on recent statements that President Yoweri Museveni was angry about the media coverage of the Kasese killings. .

Last week, The Daily Monitor carried a story, quoting anonymous sources saying Museveni had directed the Information Minister, Frank Tumwebaze to draft stringent amendments to the existing media laws.
The source also claimed that Museveni said bad reporting triggers panic among the public.

However, the Government Chief Whip, Ruth Nankabirwa, says Museveni was quoted out of context.

According to Nankabirwa, although the president has reservations on media operations in the country, he has no intentions of curtailing press freedom.

She explains that all the president wants is for the media to operate within the law.
