Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda has said government will brief parliament on the circumstances under which Kenneth Watmon Akena, a community development officer in Pader district, was shot dead at Lugogo Forest Mall parking area.

This was during the today's plenary session chaired by Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga.

Akena was allegedly shot by Matthew Kanyamunyu, a businessman in Kampala on Saturday evening after the deceased reportedly scratched Kanyamunyu's car while parking his. Kanyamunyu and his fiancée Cynthia Munangwari are currently in police custody in connection with the shooting.

Rugunda's statement came up after Pader Woman MP Lowila Oketayot raised the issue demanding an explanation from government on the shooting, citing a number of versions in the media on what could have caused the shooting.

Oketayot also demanded an explanation from government on illegal possession of firearms saying that the trend of killing citizens by shooting is worrying. The MP also demanded the public to give police time to carry out thorough investigation into the matter.

Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga appealed to the MPs not to discuss details of the matter since it is under investigation, but asked Prime Minister Rugunda to give answers since the matter is in the public domain.

Rugunda then noted that the internal affairs minister Obiga Kania will brief the House on the progress of the investigation. He, however, did not attach a timeline on when the statement will be presented on the floor of parliament.

The prime minister also assured parliament that the law will take its course and that those responsible will be dealt with.

The family asked police not to give room for prominence of the suspects or the suspects' relatives to overshadow the justice they deserve.
