The sudden population explosion in Kalangala district has sparked off fears, because of the limited resources in the district. Samuel Kasirye, the Kalangala District Population Officer, says that the district has over the past five years witnessed a gradual increase in the population growth. According to the 2002 population census, there were 34,766 people in the district, but this figure increased to more than 50,000 people in 2007. Kasirye says the population growth rate is now estimated at 8.5%. Kasirye largely attributes the high growth rate to the high net rate of Immigration. Many people have migrated to Kalangala in search for jobs at the BIDCO oil palm project. Kasirye says there are even more problems in the ongoing immigration explosion. He says poor childcare, zero access to education for illegal immigrants, friction with the locals are serious problems bound to confront the district authorities.
