Gulu district education service commission plans to recruit 500 teachers to contain the surging number of pupils enrolled under the Universal Primary Education- UPE program.

There are well over 14,000 pupils enrolled in more than 100 schools in Gulu.

In January this year, the district recruited 517 Primary school teachers with the approval of the Ministry of public service.

Rev. Vincent Oceng Ocen, the DEO for Gulu, says the district has 1416 teachers who have been posted to 113 government-aided schools in line with the Ministry of Education and sports guidelines.

Rev. Oceng Ocen said the new recruits would assist to contain the swelling number of pupils in schools.

Caesar Akena, the Senior Education officer in charge of administration for Gulu Akena said that the new recruits would meet the staff ceilings for some of the schools, which were lacking teachers.

The shortage of teachers in some schools has been attributed to retirement, dismissal and resignation.

Betty Aol Ocan, the Gulu woman MP has appealed to the government to increase funding to UPE schools in the district as they emerge from the over 20 years of Insurgency in order to revive the education system.

She added that some parents in Northern Uganda were living in an absolute poverty and cannot raise 500 shilling per day, hence many are finding it difficult to provide a better education to their children.
