A brazen mid morning shooting in Kampala city has let hundreds of traders in shock and scrambling for safety after opposition protesters came out to protest the manner in which FDC Leader Kiiza Besigye was arrested.

Armed with sticks, stones and rubber tyres, the protesters came out en mass and started setting bon fires on the streets.

Gunshots could be heard in Kiseka Market as police battled the vendors and blocked all roads leading to and out of the market.

Uganda Radio Network Reporters at the scene say they could hear people screaming, shouting on top of their voices and gunshots filled the air.

A teenager identified as Semugga Kanabi, was shot and killed by a stray bullet at Nakivubo Muse just close to the central business area. Another boy identified as Kiyimba Moses has been shot in the stomach and was rushed to hospital by the Red Cross team.

Traders in Kikubo have decided to close shops and many were seen rising up their hands before the police to be allowed get safely out.

Many passengers are stranded and traffic has been grounded to a halt.

The armored military trucks have been stationed on major junctions in the city, Boda boda men in all stages in the city have been ordered out of the city.

Police used teargas to disperse hundreds of protesters who stood at the top of the buildings to hurl stones at the police. In the worst-case scenario, some protesters on top of buildings were seen lighting fires on boxes and throwing them down on the police.

The seemingly well-coordinated protests come a day after FDC Leaders Kiiza Besigye was arrested in what has been described as a brutal manner.
