Teargas and lived bullets rocked Hoima municipality on Thursday afternoon during the eviction of mechanics from Kwebiha road.

It all started when the more than 300 mechanics resisted their eviction by Majimoto Auctioneers and Court Bailiff.

They started pelting the court bailiffs with stones prompting Anti-riot police to use teargas and live bullet to disperse them.

Police also arrested the ring leaders of the protest and whisked them to Hoima Central Police station.  More than 40 Motorcycle spare parts shops along Kwebiha road were also closed during the eviction.

On April 25, 2019, Hoima Chief Magistrate's court issued an order authorizing Majimoto Auctioneers and court Bailiff to evict the mechanics on behalf of Hoima municipality.

Municipal Authorities argue that oil waste originating from the motorcycles being repaired by the mechanics was spoiling the newly constructed road under the Uganda support to Municipal Infrastructural Development-USMID-Project.

They say they secured a piece of land in Kiryatete Industrial area in Kahoora division where they intend to relocate the mechanics.

However, the mechanics vowed never to go to the new site citing lack of space, toilets, security and eating places.
