Kenya’s Harambee Stars are the 2013 Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup champions after seeing off Sudan 2-0 in the final played at the Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi this evening.

The win was a perfect present for Kenyans who are celebrating 50 years of Independence today.

Former professional Allan Wanga was the star with two goals. The AFC Leopards forward scored in the 35th minute with a header off a well taken David Owino cross. He gave the Sudan goalkeeper Abdelrahman Ali no chance. He was on the mark again in the 69th minute to increase Harambee Stars lead.

Sudan and the tournament’s top scorer Ibrahim Salah continued to torment the Kenyan defence, but to no avail.

Sudan Coach Mubarak Suliman said it was not an easy match playing the hosts in the final. “But the delay at the Hotel after we were denied chance to leave because of un-paid dues by the Kenya FA also disorganized us,” said Suliman.

In a match played earlier, Zambia beat Tanzania 6-5 in penalty shootouts after they had tied 1-1 in a playoff for third place. Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro Stars ejected last years’ champions Uganda Cranes at the quarter final stage.

The champions bagged a trophy, medals and a cash prize of US$30,000, while Sudan walked away with silver medals and US$20,000. The COSAFA champions Zambia who finished third also bagged medals and US$10,000. However, the sponsors decided the prize money will be wired to the accounts of the respective Football Associations.
