High Court in Kabale has upheld the election of Winfred Matsiko as the woman Member of Parliament for Rukungiri district. Her victory had been challenged by her political rival Betty Muzanira, a member of the Forum for Democratic Change- FDC party.

Muzanira disputed the election on the basis that Matsiko was involved in several electoral malpractices including voter bribery and alteration of the results contrary to section 61 of the Parliamentary Elections Act.

She alleged that on January 1, 2016 while at Nyakishenyi catholic parish in Rukungiri district, Matsiko personally and publicly donated a sum of 50,000 Shillings as her contribution towards the completion of the church.

She further accused Matsiko of donating 100,000 Shillings to Nyarushanje Catholic Parish during the Catholic Charismatic Renewal annual fellowship.

But in a judgment presented by High Court registrar Samuel Omokol, Judge Wilson Kwesiga ruled that the petitioner failed to present substantial evidence to court to prove the allegations. He added that the witnesses that were brought before court presented contradicting statements.

After ruling Matsiko told journalists that the petition was baseless.
