According to Kirungi, he drove for about a kilometer when a Premio car blocked the road and unidentified thugs tried to grab him at Mpaija village along the Hoima-Fort portal road.

Police in Hoima are investigating an attempted attack on Kadir Kirungi, an aspirant for the Hoima District LC V Chairperson's NRM party ticket. Kirungi says that he was driving his Prado vehicle registration number UAH053Q on Monday night when three men he found pushing a motorcycle along the Hoima-Fort portal road tried to wave him down but he refused to stop.

According to Kirungi, he drove for about a kilometer when a Premio car blocked the road and unidentified thugs tried to grab him at Mpaija village along the Hoima-Fort portal road. Kirungi says that he escaped through the passenger's seat and fled to the nearby bush abandoning the car.

He says the assailants followed him but one of them fell in a water logged ditch, which gave him chance to escape unhurt. The group later drove away his vehicle and abandoned it in the neighboring Kyabahesi village. The car was recovered by Police following the politician's distress call at about 2am.

Lydia Tumushabe, the Albertine Region Police spokesperson says Kirungi has already recorded a statement on the incident adding that investigations are underway. Although Kirungi escaped unhurt, he fears the thugs could have targeted his vital documents in the car.

By the time URN left Hoima Police Station, Police was yet to allow the politician to check his vehicle. It's not clear whether the attack was politically orchestrated. His rival Vincent Muhumuza was quick to blame the attack on politics saying bloody politics must be rejected. Others in the race are Deo Kiiza, Andrew Byakutaga, John Bahemuka and Alex Byensi.

Last month, unidentified thugs attacked Samuel Betonda, a chief campaigner of one of the aspirants for Kibaale District LC Chairperson's seat.
