Hundreds Welcome New Soroti Diocese Bishop

The Rt Rev Dr Eciru shall be consecrated as the 3rd Bishop of Soroti Catholic Diocese on Saturday of 25th May 2019 upon his appoint to bishop by Pope Francis on March 19th 2019.

Hundreds of Christians on Wednesday flocked Fika Salama- a border point between Bukedea and Mbale districts to welcome the Bishop-elect of Soroti Catholic Diocese, Rt Rev Dr Joseph Eciru Oliach ahead of his consecration on Saturday.

Eciru who has been teaching at St Mary's National Major Seminary, Ggaba in Kampala was welcomed by joyful Christians with some trekking for several kilometers while others moved on motorcycles.

Eciru will be consecrated as the 3rd Bishop of Soroti Catholic Diocese on Saturday after his appointment by Pope Francis on March 19th 2019.

Bishop Eciru will succeed His Grace, Emmanuel Obbo who was appointed to be the Archbishop Tororo Archdiocese in 2014 by Pope Francis, although he remained the apostolic administrator of Soroti Catholic Diocese.

Christians described the homecoming of bishop Eciru as a blessing to Soroti Catholic Diocese that had spent over 5 years without a substantive bishop.

Vicky Akulo, a resident of Soroti Municipality expressed her happiness for welcoming the Bishop to Soroti.

Ben Boham Okiror, also a Christian of Soroti Catholic Diocese noted that the thousands of people that welcomed the bishop portrayed their love for him.

The bishop-elect made five stop-overs and held prayers at the Catholic parishes along Soroti- Mbale highway right from Kachumbala in Bukedea district to Soroti. 

In every parish, he blessed Christians by sprinkling on them Holy water.

At Soroti Cathedral, the Archbishop of Tororo Archdiocese His Grace, Emmanuel Obbo received Rev. Eciru before short prayers were conducted at Father Hiders Primary School.

He was born in Gweri village, Gweri Sub County in Soroti district on August 1, 1970.

He attended Gweri Primary School and completed his ordinary level education from St Peter's Minor Seminary in Soroti before heading to St Pius X Seminary in Tororo district for A-levels.

In 1995, Rev Eciru then joined the National Major Seminary St Thomas Aquinas of Katigondo in Masaka diocese to study philosophy which he completed in 1998.

In 1999, he joined St Paul's National Major Seminary in Kinyamasika, Fort Portal diocese to study theology which he completed in 2003 and he was ordained a priest on 9th August 2003 for the Diocese of Soroti.
