A 22-year-old woman in Ibanda district has been arrested for attempting to sell her son.
According to the Ibanda police family and child protection unit, Clare Natukunda of Nyabuhike sub-county signed an agreement with Rosette Namatovu to sell her son.
The unit chief, Rebecca Nababi, says Natukunda had previously been reported for physically abusing her year-old son. She says that Rosette Namatovu, who claims to have personally witnessed the abuse, offered to buy the boy in order to save him from further torture.
The case was reported by Deogratious Chantury, the LC1 chairperson of Kyaruhaga Ward. Chantury says the two women hadn't agreed on how much the purchase of the child would cost, but a clear agreement was made between them.
Both Natukunda and Namtovu are in police detention, awaiting prosecution for child neglect and human trafficking. The police are also investigating Namatovu for attempted child sacrifice.
